I recently presented at the Indiana Lakes Management Society annual meeting, conveniently held at Swan Lake in Plymouth, IN. It wasn’t recorded, but since I went to the trouble of preparing it, I recorded a version to share more broadly. Here’s the abstract and video:
In spring of 2025, the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund (LMEF) – with financial support from the Marshall County Community Foundation’s Vonnegut Fund – deployed a data buoy in Lake Maxinkuckee. The buoy was launched to collect background data on in-lake water quality and to increase LMEF’s engagement with the public. The buoy monitored pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, algae, chlorophyll, and meteorological parameters, all transmitted to a public online dashboard. We will discuss the nuts and bolts of deploying our first in-field monitoring equipment: logistics, troubleshooting, calibration, community partnerships, data analysis, constituent feedback, and – of course – sailing spiders and mischievous muskrats.

Hi, I’m Adam Thada, President of the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund in Culver, IN. I studied Biology (BS) at Indiana Wesleyan University and Environmental Science (MSci) at Taylor University. The last decade or so has found me in Northern Indiana, working in sustainability, environmental education, and ecological restoration.
