If that title sounds familiar, first head over to this excellent summary post for the full back-story: 2022 Kline Levee Update.

The Kline levee retains water for the 80-acre DNR property known as the Maxinkuckee Wetlands, public property that is open to hunting and recreation. LMEF assists the DNR in the management of this property. The wetland filters run-off from the 1,900 acres of land that drains to Lake Maxinkuckee through this channel.

Survey points of the levee were taken in 2024, revealing that we reached the trigger point set by the geotechnical engineers that necessitates additional fill to the center portion of the levee. Hopefully for the last time!

Heavy equipment is being mobilized already, with work set to begin next week (Jan. 13th). Everything is weather dependent, but we hope the disturbance will only last for a couple weeks. During the 2025 growing season, seeding will take place to establish native, herbaceous (non-woody) plants over top.

This project is completely funded by donors like you! LMEF’s mission is “the preservation of an ecologically healthy Lake Maxinkuckee and its watershed.” It is because of the decades of work, meetings, grants, workshops, tours, and donations that this work is made possible. However it is that you contribute – THANK YOU! The survival and health of this unique natural space depends on us all.

Stay tuned for more levee updates throughout the year…
